Liverpool have rejected a new approach from Inter Milan for Curtis Jones as the Reds continue to take a firm stance on their assessment of the midfielder.

The Italian giants submitted a new verbal offer worth a total of €25m (£21m) in the past 24 hours, which was summarily rejected by the Merseyside club.

According to prominent journalists Fabrizio Romano and Paul Joyce, no agreement has yet been reached between the two clubs as Liverpool value the academy graduate at a much higher price and have no intention of proceeding with a deal on current terms.

Ben Jacobs talks about Liverpool’s change in stance on Curtis Jones

Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that Inter’s tenacious approach has led to a major change in stance at Anfield.

Inter took a new approach last week, reaching out for informal conversations rather than a written offer, asking if an agreement could be reached for around 25 million euros.

Liverpool made it immediately clear that they would not allow a sale in this price range, especially given the huge fees that other midfielders are expected to pay in this summer’s transfer window.

As a result, the club’s position has hardened. Liverpool are prepared to allow a sale if they receive a suitable and significantly increased valuation, but are equally open to keeping Jones until the final year of his contract, even at the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Ben Jacobs posted the following update on X.

“Inter took a new approach to Curtis Jones last week, asking if they could sign him for around 25 million euros.

“This was a conversation rather than a formal or written offer. Liverpool made it clear that a sale at this price was not possible, especially given the number of other midfielders expected to be sold this summer.”

“Liverpool are prepared to keep Jones unless a suitable bid is found, even if that means losing him on a free transfer next summer.

“Despite Inter reapproaching the club and growing interest elsewhere, Liverpool have never had any concerns about Jones’ attitude or professionalism.

“Please understand that the club’s position has been solidified as a result of Inter’s recent contacts. A sale would be sanctioned if a suitable offer were made, but Inter would need to significantly increase their valuation to get a deal with Liverpool.”

“It’s worth noting that Liverpool are also happy with Jones staying. If that happens and he impresses Andoni Iraola, they could still decide to negotiate a new contract.”

Why Liverpool are willing to keep Curtis Jones despite transfer interest

Despite growing interest from Inter Milan and other clubs, Liverpool continue to view Jones as an important member of their squad.

The Reds have never had any concerns about the midfielder’s attitude, professionalism or commitment, and the academy graduate remains highly regarded within the club.

Liverpool are therefore under no pressure for cash. Instead, they are willing to keep Jones for the remainder of his contract if their valuation is not met.

There is still a path to a long-term future at Anfield. Liverpool could resume talks about a new contract extension if Jones impresses new manager Andoni Iraola during pre-season and the season ahead.

But for now, Liverpool’s message is clear. Inter Milan will need to significantly improve their offer if they want to have any chance of signing Curtis Jones this summer.

Curtis Jones’ Liverpool stats

Inter Milan may believe they can strike a cut-price deal, but Liverpool’s valuation reflects Jones’ growing importance to the team and his consistent contribution over recent seasons.

The midfielder has made 228 first-team appearances for the Reds since coming through the club’s academy, scoring 22 goals and assisting 25 while playing in a variety of midfield roles.

His ability to play as a number eight, deep midfielder or advanced playmaker has made him a valuable option for successive managers.

Jones featured regularly in multiple competitions last season, racking up significant minutes despite intense competition for a place in Liverpool’s midfield. His ball possession, pressing strength and tactical versatility were praised by coaches behind the scenes and helped him establish himself as a reliable team member.

At 25, Jones is also entering what is traditionally considered the peak of a midfielder’s career.

Liverpool therefore see little incentive to sell for €25 million, especially in a market where established Premier League midfielders command significantly higher fees.
