Manchester United appear to be close to signing Ederson from Atalanta, but Fabrizio Romano says he is likely to be just their first midfield signing this summer.

Romano revealed in a post on X that Man United are planning to sign a second midfielder, with Manuel Ugarte expected to follow Casemiro in leaving Old Trafford this summer.

Ederson has been in good form during his time in Serie A and looks like an exciting addition to the Red Devils squad, but the Brazil international is not enough on his own.

See below for more details. Romano says this signing is almost certainly just the first of two midfield new additions this transfer window…

“Ederson is only the first midfield signing at Manchester United, but at least one more signing is planned, with Casemiro and Ugarte leaving. #MUFC One more will be added, but under certain conditions it could become two,” said the Italian journalist.

Ederson is set to move to Manchester United, but who could be next?

Ederson is an excellent all-rounder in the middle of the park, capable of not only defending but also moving the ball forward.

The 26-year-old will likely be given a more defensive role at United. It would make sense for him to be seen as a replacement for the departing Casemiro, as Ugarte also has a more defensive orientation.

MUFC have both Bruno Fernandes and Koby Mainu as more advanced midfielders focused on scoring and assisting, so the club’s second midfielder signing would likely be of a similar style.

According to Give Me Sport and others, Adam Wharton is one of the names linked to United by the Sun, and there is also a lot of talk about them competing with Manchester City to sign Elliott Anderson.

Midfield makes sense as a priority for United this summer, but it will also be interesting to see if they are tempted to strengthen other areas of the team, perhaps strengthening one or two players in defense and attack.
