Tuesday was a big day for Brian Rolup and the PGA Tour. PGA not only announced a long-discussed new product; 2 series tour structure and schedule format Looking forward to 2028 and beyond, Lollup also got a new job. The Tour announced that Mr. Rolup has been elected as its new commissioner, adding to his current title of CEO of the PGA Tour.
PGA Tour Enterprises Chairman Joe Gorder announced that the board of directors voted Monday to select Lollup as the new commissioner, replacing Jay Monahan, who will retire at the end of the year. Elevating Mr. Lorup to the role of commissioner in addition to CEO strengthens his authority and affirms that he is in charge, which has been clear since he took over last year.
It is fitting that this announcement be made in conjunction with the structural changes to the PGA Tour, as the revamped tour model and schedule were Lorup’s top priorities and he was the driving force behind making those changes. Lollup made it clear from the beginning that he was coming to the PGA Tour as an outsider to the golf world, but he wanted to bridge the gap between the desires of fans and players to create a tour that met the needs of players while providing the best product for fans.
Although a relatively simple approach, it has been well-received within the PGA Tour’s office, and Mr. Lollup’s appointment as commissioner is a seal of approval for his first year-plus of tour coaching efforts. As the new touring structure takes shape in 2028, it made sense to have the man who was the driving force behind the new model as director long-term.
When Rolup joined the PGA Tour, he entered a unique environment where the tour was still battling LIV Golf and figuring out how best to proceed. With the future of LIV now in question and it becoming clearer what the Tour will look like in the long term with this new structure, Lorup will reap the fruits of his early efforts by presiding over a coming era of strength and stability on the PGA Tour.
