Arsenal manager is expected to make a statement, with two England World Cup stars on Arteta’s radar

Arsenal’s preparations for the new season have been disrupted by William Saliba’s serious injury, forcing the club to reconsider whether they need a new centre-back before the transfer window closes.

Mikel Arteta will be without one of the most important players in his defence, with the French defender expected to be out for an extended period of time after picking up a back problem during the World Cup.

The Gunners already have several options, including Gabriel, Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Calafioli, Ben White and Julian Timber.

However, given fitness concerns and Saliba’s importance on the right side of central defence, Arsenal may still want reliable and experienced reinforcements.

Two England internationals have been floated as potential solutions, but they would be very different types of transfers.

Free agent opportunities and £60m option on the table

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are interested in John Stones and Ezri Konsa after it was confirmed Saliba is facing a lengthy rehabilitation period.

Stones will be available for free after leaving Manchester City, but Arteta knows him well from their time together at the Etihad Stadium.

Given his experience, passing ability and ease of slotting into midfield, he could be an attractive solution in the short term.

Konsa offers greater durability and has consistently played a key role for Aston Villa.

However, with two years remaining on his contract, there is reportedly a wide gap between Arsenal’s valuation and Villa’s offer, which is believed to be around £60 million.

Arsenal need protection, not panic signs

The injury does not require surgery, but Reuters confirmed that Saliba worsened his symptoms in the World Cup semi-final against Spain and will need to follow a managed recovery program.

The Stones are the smarter short-term option. He understands Arteta’s methods and could play at centre-back or move into midfield and would not require a transfer fee.

His injury history is an obvious concern, but Arsenal will likely sign him as an experienced cover rather than asking him to replace Saliba permanently.

Konsa is a younger, more reliable and perhaps physically safer player, but it may be difficult to justify spending nearly £60m on another centre-back if Saliba is expected to return.

Arsenal need protection, not panic. For the Stones, a carefully structured deal could provide immediate quality while preserving funding for other priority areas.
