Mike Tyson Throws Support Behind Muhammad Ali US Boxing Reinstatement Act

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has expressed his support for the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Restoration Act. This legislation, initially proposed by Representatives Brian Jack (R-Ga.) and Sharice David (D-Kansas) and backed by UFC CEO Dana White alongside the Zuffa Boxing Promotion Organization, aims to revise the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act established in 2000 to protect boxers from exploitation.

The proposed reinstatement law has faced criticism within the boxing community, with opponents accusing Dana White of attempting to modify regulations to enable Zuffa Boxing to function like the UFC. In the UFC, MMA fighters typically earn much less than boxers, which allows White to control the promotion by managing his own ranking systems, sanctioning bodies, and world titles.

Tyson, who is 58 and a longtime friend of White, spoke in favor of the bill before the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee. He stated, “Muhammad Ali has always been a hero to me inside and outside the ring. Supporting these amendments will uphold the spirit of the original Ali Act by closing loopholes that let some promoters regain exclusive control over fighters’ careers. This law will restore balance, letting boxers decide their career paths while maintaining the sport’s integrity. It won’t affect fighters happy with the current system but offers other options for those seeking alternative routes aligned with their goals.”

Tyson also highlighted the importance of mandatory health insurance for fighters, emphasizing that no athlete should have to choose between medical expenses and their careers. “I’ve witnessed too many peers facing that tough decision,” he added.

Representatives from Zuffa Boxing told ESPN that the new legislation doesn’t alter the existing language of the Ali Act but believes stronger enforcement will ultimately benefit boxers by creating more opportunities.

Representative Brian Jack expressed pride in Tyson’s backing, calling him one of the greatest boxers ever and a cultural icon. “Mike Tyson supports the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act because it safeguards boxers and introduces more pathways and career options for fighters striving to reach top success.”

Fan Take: This development is crucial for fight fans as it signals a potential shift in boxing’s governance and the fighter’s control over their careers. If successful, it could lead to fairer pay, better protections, and more opportunities for boxers, ultimately enhancing the sport’s integrity and appeal.
