HOUSTON – Mauricio Pochettino expressed his frustration, and a US player voiced concerns about the officiating after the USMNT fell 2-1 to Mexico in the Conca Caff Gold Cup final.

Pochettino and his staff conveyed their dissatisfaction to the fourth official during the match. The US head coach later dedicated four minutes at a post-match press conference to discussing the officiating, sharing his views on perceived inconsistencies. He remarked about the handball incident, emphasizing that if the roles were reversed, it surely would have been called a penalty.
While he acknowledged that it could be seen as a “silly” penalty, he insisted that under the circumstances, it should have been awarded since the player on the ground pushed his hand toward the ball. Former referee Christina Ankel, however, disagreed, stating that Sanchez’s action was unintentional and thus not a foul. Pochettino stood firm in his conviction, stating, “If that was a penalty, we might be celebrating a trophy now.”
He suggested that the Pro-Mexican crowd may have influenced the referee’s decisions. Regarding Mexico’s second goal, he commented, "This tournament has seen two questionable goals for Mexico. Today was no different; Montes obscured Chris Richards when the ball arrived, and he was offside at that moment."
Pochettino criticized the foul that led to the free kick for Mexico’s goal, explaining that the player merely tripped over himself.
Although he conceded that the referee’s role in the match cannot be underestimated, he passionately defended his team, asserting that it’s essential to speak honestly about what transpired. "We lost today—that’s true. But everyone can see what happened,” he stated.
