  • Will Liverpool and Chelsea qualify for the Champions League?

Liverpool and Chelsea have now been given a huge boost as they battle to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Premier League has secured its fifth Champions League spot this season, according to a report from the BBC. Arsenal defeated Sporting CP 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, helping to secure fifth place for English clubs in next season’s Champions League.

Additional Champions League places for England teams

The extra spots will be given to the two leagues with the best overall results over the three European seasons, with the Premier League winning the extra spots for their outstanding performance.

Apart from the Premier League, it seems possible that La Liga will also be able to acquire additional spots ahead of Germany and Portugal.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea and Liverpool can secure a top-five finish at this point. Both teams have been very inconsistent in recent months and will need to increase their performance level if they are to qualify for the Champions League next campaign.

Will Liverpool and Chelsea qualify for the Champions League?

Not being able to participate in Europe’s top competition would be a devastating financial blow. Without Champions League football next season, they will also struggle to recruit top-level players.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are all but guaranteed to finish in the top three this season. Securing a top-four finish would have been difficult for Liverpool and Chelsea, especially given Aston Villa’s performances this season. The additional Champions League spots will certainly make it easier for Liverpool and Chelsea to secure Champions League qualification for next season.
