In what could be one of the most surprising transfer stories of the upcoming transfer window, Tottenham are reportedly preparing to move on for Rangers’ veteran captain.
The 34-year-old, who has spent more than a decade at Ibrox, is set to become a free agent this summer, with Spurs reportedly at the front of the queue to sign him.

Tottenham to sign James Tavanier if relegated
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are considering a move for Tavernier in preparation for a possible shake-up of the squad.
Interestingly, the deal is reportedly subject to the club’s league status. Spurs, currently embroiled in a desperate battle to avoid relegation under manager Roberto De Zerbi, believe Tavernier’s leadership and experience are key assets, especially if they are to qualify for the Championship next season.
The paper adds that now relegated Wolves are also interested in the player, but the lure of north London could prove decisive for the veteran right-back as he bids for the final major in his storied career.
Tavernier’s impressive scoring record for Rangers
Tavernier has established himself as one of the most prolific defenders in modern English football and will leave Glasgow as a certified legend.
This season, he has scored 14 goals and assisted a further six goals in 50 games in all competitions.
In his 11 years at Ibrox, the captain made over 560 appearances, scoring an unprecedented 144 goals and assisting a further 148.
His ability from set-pieces and relentless energy down the right wing helped Rangers win a historic Scottish Premiership title in 2021 and reach the Europa League final in 2022.
For Spurs, who have struggled with stability and veteran leadership this season, this number represents a rare opportunity to acquire a high-caliber player for no transfer fee.
Spurs considering signing Andy Robertson and new free agent
The interest in Tavernier appears to be part of a broader strategy to acquire experienced leaders on free transfers.
Tottenham are also said to be the frontrunners to sign Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, according to reports, but any deal for Robertson will depend on Spurs avoiding relegation.
The Scotland captain is also set to leave the club as a free agent this summer, bringing an end to his glittering career at Liverpool.
