Manchester United have made contact with former Liverpool star Neco Williams to sign him, following his impressive spell with Nottingham Forest.

What manager Jurgen Klopp said about Neco Williams

Upon completing his move to the City Ground in the summer of 2022, manager Jurgen Klopp admitted he was disappointed to see Williams leave, saying: “He is a bright and exciting talent who is going to a club that is on the rise at the moment.

“He’s already achieved a lot, but there’s a lot more to come. For us, the Premier League and Champions League experience, promotion last season with Fulham, I have to say he’s looked after us wonderfully. He’s someone who definitely helped us win trophies. He’s one of Wales’ most important players and will be playing in the World Cup.”

“To be honest, it’s not easy to let him go, but he has earned the right to play regularly and to prepare the national team for this competition that will come in the winter.”

Since then, the full-back has become a key player for Nottingham Forest, making 158 appearances for the club and Tricky Trees are looking to sign him to a new contract, although his current contract is due to expire in 2029.

This is according to a report from BBC Sport, which claims Man United are currently conducting a careful search to sign Williams in the summer, with Premier League rivals Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa also conducting similar searches.

The 25-year-old currently earns £65,000-a-week, but Forest are keen to shake off interest from elsewhere and are looking to offer him improved terms.

Williams is now one of Forest’s most important players.

The Wrexham-born defender can play on both sides of the defence, and has had plenty of football experience this season, making 51 appearances in all competitions and missing just one Premier League game due to suspension.

Manchester United have been urged by manager Gary Neville to sign a left-back as Michael Carrick’s side are set to return to the Champions League and are expected to be even busier next season.

Neville said: “If you want to play a 4-4-2, I’m all for the way United do it, but you have two very special players there and you need defenders who can play one-on-one.

“We ask a lot from our players. I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and may struggle.”

Shaw has struggled with the injury front at Man United so far, so Carrick could get away with bringing in a left-back who can play every game, and Williams has proven he is up to the task.
