The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association men’s golf postseason began May 26 and 27, with regional tournaments held throughout the state.

The top programs in the Milwaukee area were among the standout performers in the region meet, with Marquette, Arrowhead and Lake Country Lutheran winning their respective regions, among others.

Sectionals will be held June 2 or June 3 to narrow down the state qualifying teams and individuals to the 100th WIAA State Men’s Golf Tournament to be held June 8 and 9 at University Ridge in Madison. Here are highlights of regional play for teams and individuals in the Milwaukee area.

division 1

Section 4

In Region 4-A at Old Hickory Golf Club, Slinger (304) defeated fellow qualifiers Hartford Union (325), Oshkosh West (341) and Beaver Dam (347) for a commanding victory by a 21-stroke margin. The Slingers accounted for four of the top five, led by tournament medalist and senior Ryan Bellanti’s 2-over-par 74, while Hartford senior Ben Sabel (76) broke out the top five, which consisted of Owls senior Jed Fahrenholtz (76), sophomore Charles Davis (76) and senior Zach Argue (78).

Milwaukee-area programs Cedarburg (320) and Grafton (323) tied for the top spot in Region 4-B with Sheboygan North (323) and Plymouth (329). Cedarburg senior Owen Wood was the tournament medalist with a 2-over 73, followed by Grafton senior Jake Rydell (75). Port Washington (338th) fell behind the team by nine strokes, but will send senior Jack Showalter (T-3, 77) and senior Eric Krenz (T-10, 82) to sectionals.

Section 5

Mukwonago (308) emerged from Region 5-B at Edgewood Golf Course, tied for second place with Milton in a crowded top-four team that included regional champion Badgers (306) and fourth-place Edgerton (313). Mukwonago junior Reese Erickson (75) finished four strokes behind Milton junior medalist Cade Wieland (71), while fellow Mukwonago junior Cooper Hietala (76) tied for fifth.

Section 6

Arrowhead (294th) defeated Germantown (299th), Menomonee Falls (302nd) and Homestead (304th) at Meequon Park Golf Course to win the District 6 competitive title. Oconomowoc (307th) and Brookfield Central (308th) narrowly missed the cut. Arrowhead junior Ian Pyatt was the medalist with a 3-under 67, ahead of Menomonee Falls junior Weilan Hung (69). Arrowhead senior Jonathan Amtmann and Menomonee Falls junior Evan Misiak tied for third with 71 points. Brookfield Central sent two players to sectionals, with junior Owen Song and senior Lucas DeRosa tied for eighth with 75 points.

Whitefish Bay (305) came out on top in Region 6-B at Brown Deer Park Golf Course, led by a 1-over 72 from tournament co-medalist Jacob Gerend. Fellow Blue Dukes senior Thomas Bigan was one stroke back in third place (73), and Wisconsin Lutheran senior Griffin Frye shared the individual region title with Gerendo. Wisconsin Lutheran (312 points), Brookfield East (318 points) and Wauwatosa East/West (319 points) were the remaining division qualifiers, with Nicollet (330 points) taking first place. The Knights will continue to have a de facto team presence in the sectional as senior Max Morris (T-10th, 79th), junior Cameron Schweiner (T-11th, 81st), senior Miles Carlson (T-19th, 84th) and senior Reece Bean (T-23rd, 86th) earned all four individual qualifying spots.

Section 7

At Morningstar Golfers Club in Region 7A, Kettle Moraine (304) won, with Waukesha West (313), Waukesha North (318) and New Berlin Eisenhower (326) also earning spots. New Berlin West (333rd) did not qualify, but will send junior Jackson Comp (T-9, 79th) as an individual. Waukesha West senior Mason Coufal shot an even-par 72 and was the medalist, ahead of Kettle Moraine’s Liam Mone and Waukesha North senior Lukas Piacek, who tied for second with scores of 74 each.

Marquette, the Division 1 state champion, defeated fellow division qualifiers Greenfield (352 strokes) and Milwaukee Regan (354 strokes) to win Region 7-B with a team stroke of 287. Freshman Connelly Doerr was the individual medalist with a 2-under 69 at Whitnall Park Golf Course. For the Hilltoppers, junior Hayes Packey and sophomore Luke Planty each posted a 71 to occupy the top four spots on the leaderboard, while sophomore Christian Elian tied for fourth with a 76.

Section 8

For the Brighton Dale Lynx, Kenosha Tremper (328) and Racine Case (335) earned sectional spots behind Region 8A champion Westosha Central (313) and runner-up Wilmot Union (327). Tremper freshman Owen Callahan was the tournament medalist with a 2-over 74. Kenosha Bradford junior Mateo Santelli qualified fifth individually (77) despite his team not qualifying.

In Region 8B, Franklin (318 games) defeated Oak Creek (318 games) in the tiebreaker, while Whitnall (324 games) and Greendale (332 games) edged out Muskego (335 games) for the final qualifying spot. Despite missing out on a team spot, Muskego will send three people to sectionals as junior Adam Johims (T-7th, 80th), senior Parker Murawski (T-12th, 83rd) and senior Nick Rochon (21st, 84th) will compete. Whitnall junior Grady Lorum and Franklin junior Caleb Peterson were co-medalists in the event after shooting a 4-over 76 at Oakwood Park Golf Course.

division 2

Section 4

D2 state favorite Lake Country Lutheran (310) won Region 4-B behind tournament medalist and junior Max Zastrow’s 1-under 71 at Kettle Hills Golf Course. Freshman Max Neumann took second place with 75 points, and senior Owen Liebum took fourth with 80 points. Following LCL in team qualifying were University of Milwaukee School (326), Kettle Moraine Lutheran (334) and Shorewood (347). Brookfield Academy (360th) did not qualify but will send senior Raghav Vijayapal (14th, 85th) to each division.

Catholic Memorial (316) won District 4-C at Broadlands Golf Club, defeating fellow qualifiers Lakeside Lutheran (330), Lake Mills (341) and Martin Luther (351). Competition for a spot on the final qualifying team was fierce, with East Troy (352nd), St. John’s Northwestern/Chesterton Academy (354th) and St. Thomas More (354th) all within striking distance. CMH senior Zach Peplinski (73) finished with a 1-over 73 to become the tournament medalist by two strokes over Martin Luther senior Tyler Michalski (75). SJNW/CA sophomore Daniel Nelson qualified for the individual spot with a score of 79, tying for fourth overall.

division 3

Section 4

Williams Bay (332 wins) won from Region 4-C over fellow sectional qualifiers Prairie School (336 wins), Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic (358 wins) and University Lake School (364 wins). Williams Bay junior Daniel Gaylord shot a 5-over 76 at Meadowbrook Country Club to become the tournament medalist, while senior teammate Derek Johnson took fourth with an 80.
