  • Aston Villa want an attacker with Premier League experience
  • Newcastle are expected to demand a hefty transfer fee.

Aston Villa are reportedly considering Harvey Barnes as a potential summer signing, making it a logical move for both parties.

According to Football Insider, the Newcastle United winger’s future is far from certain, with Villa emerging as one of the clubs monitoring his situation ahead of the new season.

Barnes is not a player Newcastle would desperately want to push, but his position in the team becomes more interesting.

The Magpies are expected to change the shape of their attack after releasing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, with Eddie Howe also rumored to be a new wide player.

That naturally begs the question of who stays, who leaves, and where Barnes fits into Newcastle’s next frontline.

Aston Villa want an attacker with Premier League experience

From Villa’s point of view, Barnes would be a very useful addition. He has proven in the Premier League that he is direct, quick and dangerous when attacking from the left.

He also poses a real goal threat, something Unai Emery always rates in a wide player.

Barnes joined Newcastle from Leicester City in 2023 on a five-year deal thought to be around £38m, with his contract still running until 2028.

His numbers show why Villa are interested. In the 2025/26 season, Barnes played 55 games in all competitions and scored 16 goals, including seven in the Premier League and six in Europe.

He has now scored 30 goals in 118 games during his Newcastle career, but it was a strong return for the winger who was not necessarily guaranteed a starting spot.

Newcastle are expected to demand a hefty transfer fee.

The challenge for Villa will be fees. Newcastle are not in a weak negotiating position, especially after the financial cushion they have gained from the sale of Gordon.

Barnes is experienced, local, and only 28 years old, so they weren’t going to let him go lightly.

Barnes would be a smart but somewhat expensive option for Aston Villa. He will add pace, end product and Premier League experience without requiring a long adaptation period.

For Newcastle, the decision will depend on their attacking plan. If Barnes is still a central part of Howe’s team, they should keep him.

However, if a new signing arrives and his role diminishes, it may be wise to sell him for a reasonable price.
