The message from Newcastle is that Guimarães is not for sale, but Arsenal are still in the hunt for the Brazil international, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s been a busy 24 hours or so in the Guimarães to Arsenal transfer saga, but here are some of the key stories…

  • Yesterday, the Daily Mail reported on Arsenal’s interest in Guimarães.
  • David Ornstein later reported for The Athletic that Arsenal had made a verbal offer of £60m for the 28-year-old.
  • Further reporting from BBC Sport claims that Arsenal are interested in both Guimarães and his Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali.
  • This evening, the Telegraph reported that Newcastle want £100m for Guimarães, but feel Arsenal are unlikely to come close to meeting that asking price.

Now, the Mail has reported on the matter again, and it appears Arsenal are planning to make a new offer for the former Lyon player.

Should Arsenal spend big on Bruno Guimarães?

Some Arsenal fans may feel that this is the signing Arsenal need to give their midfield something different this summer.

Guimarães has proven in the Premier League that he arguably has a higher quality of the ball than Declan Rice or Martin Zvimendi and is capable of threatening goal from the center of the park.

Still, he is far from the weakest player in Arsenal’s squad and will likely end up costing a lot of money, but he is also a player who will turn 29 early next season.

All in all, it may seem a little surprising that the AFC are putting so much effort into this potential signing instead of a young player, but perhaps Newcastle’s stance means it’s inevitable that it will fail to materialize anyway.
