A few years ago, John Daly was asked why he was so popular. It’s been more than 30 years since he won the second of his two major championships, but it’s still tied.
But Daly didn’t know the answer.

“I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know,” Daly said. “I think Chad is doing a great job writing quotes for our T-shirt company. The younger kids like it. I don’t know, maybe because of the beard they think I’m really Santa Claus. But Justin Thomas said I’m a bad Santa, so that’s out the window. I don’t know.”
The reporter again asked Daley to explain his connection with fans.
“I think it’s because I don’t really have any skeletons in my closet,” Daly said. “If I mess up, I’ll honestly say I messed up, and I think the fans like that. I don’t think that’s it – I’m not looking over my shoulder. Are they going to know this and that? Everybody knows everything about me on this tour – my life, my ex-wife, everything – and it’s out there, so there’s nothing to hide.
“I think that’s honesty, if you will.”

Was he happy approaching his life that way?
“Yes,” Daly said. “If I hadn’t done that, my mother would have come out of the grave.”
That is one answer behind his popularity.
Below is probably something else.
This week, Daly will compete in the Regions Tradition, the second major tournament of the year for gangsters over 50. Daley is 3 over par after two rounds at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Alabama. But one moment during Wednesday’s practice round that you may have already seen is worth watching — as of Friday afternoon, the video of what happened had garnered 1.6 million views on X.
The photo was shared by @alabamabart, who wrote, “John Daly hit a near shot on the 17th and picked a little guy out of the crowd. He calmly walked over and dropped the putt. Might be the best I’ve seen all day.” That’s a good summary. The 21-second video shows Daly and the boy walking toward Daly’s ball, which appears to be a little more than 5 feet away. The boy circled the ball, looked at the hole, paused for a moment, and putted with Daley’s putter. he looked up.

Daly raised his arms. Daley and the boy hugged each other.
And the fans around the green cheered.
